OPERATIONS
Children, adolescents, and young adults are assisted, free of charge, at the Institute
for Children with Diabetes , through a partnership agreement with the Conceição
Hospital Group, that belongs to Ministry of Health of Brazil, in a modern and complete
infrastructure with Day-Hospital, Ambulatory Care, Nutrition Workshop, Dental Offices,
Ophthalmology Center, Toy Library, and Hot Line, a phone line for emergency
situations.
The assisted age group is, at an entry level, children, adolescents, and young adults
from 0 to 20 years of age. That is because most cases of type 1 diabetes (insulin-
dependent) occur within this range. However, since the complications start to take
place usually after 10 years with the disease and knowing that, after 25 years with
diabetes, patients free of nephropathy (renal insufficiency) are not likely to present it,
ICD intends to follow-up on patients for 25 years with the disease.
We also provide support to the families, who must get involved in this process as well,
since diabetes is known as the 24-hour disease, which is the amount of time it
demands on a daily basis to control it.
